My Why Not

Happy Sunday Y’all! Last week I shared my why with you. What is it that makes my heart happy, what it is that keeps me going, and what it is that keeps my business up and running.

You can read the whole version of “My Why” Here.

This week I want to share with you My Why Not. One of my most asked questions…

Customer: “Do you do custom t-shirts?”

Me: “No, We do not offer custom t-shirts any longer.”

Customer: “Why not?”

When we first started our business in 2014 we solely did local sportswear and “custom” designed t-shirts. It was great for awhile, however it slowly grew harder and harder for me to continue to offer the custom designs for three reasons…
1. It’s not truly custom. I began to realize that the so called “custom” designs that many people were asking me to create weren’t truly custom. They were images off of Pinterest, Etsy, or Google. From the start I had a rule that I would not create a design that was exactly as shown. I knew it could be someone else’s work. However. it wore on me more and more than even switching it up wasn’t enough. Creating these “custom” designs was more like copying someone else’s design. That’s just not how I roll. (Please note that I truly took it as a compliment that people chose to give us the business rather than someone online, but it didn’t make it right.)

2. It’s not fair. I have also been on the other side of the equation where I have seen another company steal my exact design. Honestly, it hurts. I take a lot of time, energy, and effort to come up with each and every single design. Then to see it plastered all over someone else’s site shown exactly the same, well it can make your blood boil! (Please note that given that thousands of people across the world are in the same business that I am there are going to be designs that have the same saying or vibe. However, you can definitely tell when it has been downright copied.) I strongly believe that we would all be better off to support one another rather than copy one another.

3. It’s not rewarding. If you did read “My Why” then you know that I spend hours upon hours and endless energy working to create designs that are from my heart. I make each design so that someone out there feels that someone else gets them. I pray that each t-shirt touches a heart, makes someone laugh, or brings people together. By creating designs that are already someone else’s I would be stealing their joy and my own.

This world is full of great people working hard for their very own why, and I would be a fool to stand in their way. I sincerely love my little business and every single customer, and I know so many other businesses do too. It’s what makes our world work.

I challenge you today to ask yourself, why not? What is it that you will not do? What is it that questions your integrity? Whatever it may be, stand firm.

This Live Simple Life may be full of counterfeits, but you are an original and you do original work.

My Why

Happy Sunday friends! I hope you are having a fantastic day enjoying this beautiful weather, it’s got me dreaming of Fall. However, I have promised Kyle that I wouldn’t decorate for Fall until September 1st! (Stay tuned to see if that actually happens!)

Anyway, yesterday I got to finally meet Joanna, a sweet Instagram friend. She came into the store, and told me a story of how one of our t-shirts played a role in leading her to a life long friend at the perfect time. I literally got goose bumps and teared up as she was telling me how one of our t-shirts caused a whole series of happy events to play out. She said “I know this isn’t some magical t-shirt or anything, but I do believe God changed my mind last minute to put it on that day for a reason.” She was worried she sounded crazy, or that I didn’t understand. Little did she know that her story is exactly why I do what I do. I completely understood what she was saying, and her story made my heart happy.

I had already been thinking about my “why” for months while reading “Business Boutique” by Christy Wright. (The best business book I’ve ever read)  In chapter one of the book I was challenged to think about my “why”, what I love, and what my story is.

Honestly, I didn’t really plan on ever sharing my notes, but once again God has had it on my heart for awhile now and Joanna confirmed it.

My “why” is important.

I’ve had people say things to me before like “all you do is make t-shirts?” or “so your business is just t-shirts?” It honestly kinda takes me back for a minute, because I don’t see it as just making t-shirts. However, I have to realize that they didn’t mean to come across that way and don’t realize they are crushing my “why”.

So what is my “why” you ask? What is it that gets me up in the morning? What is it that keeps me running the business when I want to quit? What is that drives me?

I’ve always felt unique and weird, but at the same time believe that I have God given abilities such as creativity, organization, and originality.  I want to use those skills that He has given me to lead others to Him! I love the feeling of being related to, or making someone feel that you relate to them. I love being a small part of someone’s day. I love to see a smile or hint of laughter when someone feels that another person gets them. I love seeing hope and beauty in what others don’t.

You may see my business as “just making t-shirts” but for every single design I see…

A persons face that grinned or chuckled when they first saw the t-shirt and felt like it was a part of them.

I hear someone say “OH MY GOSH! That is so me!!!”

I hear a story like Joanna’s that reminds me that one simple t-shirt can change a mood, change a day, or heck even change a life.

I challenge you today to think about your “why”. What is it that makes you love what you do? Or maybe what is is that you love that should be shaping what you do? Maybe you love to make people feel related to like I do, or maybe you love to help people get better. Whatever it is that you do, WHY do you do it?

I hope that at some point one of our t-shirts has made you grin and made you think “someone gets me!”

Living my Why

This Live Simple Life may not always have clear directions, but it does always have a why.

Pink or Blue December We are Due

Happy Sunday Friends!

If you haven’t heard we are expected our little blessing this December, and we couldn’t be more thankful! You can catch our story of infertility and more importantly God’s plan HERE.

As promised I wanted to fill you in on how we told our family, and the moment their jaws hit the floor!

Kyle and I found out very early, approximately four weeks, due to a doctors visit for a sinus infection. Then two short weeks (more like an eternity) later we closed on our home, and we realized that we needed to tell our family early too! We closed on the house on a Friday afternoon and all our close family and friends were coming over that night to start moving and painting. One of the biggest rules in our house and life is to tell it like it is, so we knew our family and friends wouldn’t hesitate to call me out on being lazy if I wasn’t moving and painting along with everyone else. We had to tell them our surprise! (Thank God, cause we probably couldn’t have held it in anyway!)

Of course, some very important people in our life had to cancel last minute and weren’t able to make it, but we decided to stick to our plan and tell as many people at once as possible. We closed on the house and headed to our new home for a couple hours before everyone arrived. We couldn’t believe that we pulled it off, we had kept our struggles a secret and literally no one knew, it was worth it! We got to surprise them!

All of family and friends were so excited as we got to show them through the new house, and we just kept thinking “you don’t even know!” Finally everyone arrived and we talked them into sitting down to eat pizza before getting started. (I may or may not have literally been yelling at people “Go sit down! Eat first!”)

Finally, it was time! Everyone was eating and talking in our living room, and Kyle gave me the nod! He started recording, and…

I said “Guys! I want to show you our paint colors!” Literally no one cared. (Like at all! Caleb even got up to go get more pizza!)

I said, “GUYS! I’ve waited to decorate a house for years, pay attention! This is important to me!” As they all gave me an eye roll as they turned to look at me. (Can you tell we are a sassy bunch?)

With paint colors in hand I started showing them “Agreeable Grey for living, dining, kitchen, and hallway. Sea Salt and Alabaster for bathroom and bedroom. BUT we need you guys to help decide on a color for the other bedroom, PINK OR BLUE DECEMBER WE ARE DUE!!!”

I stood there with a pink and a blue paint sample, and literally everyone in the room stared at me. (I was feeling a little awkward!) Finally, it started to hit everyone at once, and their jaws hit the floor! There was pure joy, tears of joy, & pure shock! It was one of the best moments of our lives!

This photo pretty much sums up how we felt, and still do 🙂

Pink or Blue

Now we are one week away from finding out the gender of our little blessing and we want to know your vote! Pink? or Blue? What will baby Rumsey be?

This Live Simple Life may be full of surprises, but sometimes they are the best surprises ever!

Months ago as I scrolled though Facebook I came across a video Candace Cameron Bure shared on her timeline. Her daughter, Natasha Bure, surprised her on her birthday by joining the stage with Candace’s favorite band For King and Country as they sang her favorite song “Priceless”.

The moment I heard “Priceless” I fell in love, and God immediately put it on my heart to create a Priceless design. I knew I wanted the front to be a big white cross with PRICELESS down the side of it, but that was about it.

Months later, October 2016, Kyle and I attended our first For King and Country concert in Paducah, KY. It was honestly the best concert I’ve ever been too. I had already decided months before that I would release the Priceless design for Easter 2017, however, I still didn’t know what else I wanted in the design. We worshiped through the concert with thousands of other people, but near the end God got a hold of me.

I was standing there worshiping and began thanking God for our baby. (I know it sounds crazy, but you gotta ask for what you want right?) By this time we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy road, but we knew God would provide in His time. I held my stomach and prayed, Kyle did the same. After those moments I knew what the whole Priceless design was to encompass, and I was on a high. The minute we stepped out of the doors I began to tell Kyle, but I was so excited (or maybe nervous) that I couldn’t even get it out. (I’m one of those people that doesn’t explain things very well)

Like I said I knew the front of the t-shirt was to be a big white cross with the word PRICELESS running down it. I finally had the back, and it was what I would have never expected.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

To be completely honest John 3:16 had always kind of got on my nerves. Not that it isn’t an important scripture, but because it is always used for everything. However, now I see a whole different side of it. (Clearly, I am in no way shape or form a bible scholar, more like the farthest thing from it!)

Now I understand that because GOD LOVES THE WORLD (US) THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON. As I was praying for our baby I realized how much I already loved it, and it didn’t even truly exist. I got to thinking about what is truly priceless to us here on Earth…all material things fade away, but what are we willing to fight to the death for? Children. Our Children. On this Earth a woman’s and a man’s greatest love is their child. Their child is their most priceless possession.

Think about how much you love your children, or if you don’t have them how much you are going to love them someday. Can you image sacrificing your child for someone else? No! It is unfathomable. God did it though. He see’s each of us as being so priceless that He gave His one and only son for us! How amazing is that?

After the design was completed I hoped that I would still be able to release it on Easter, and thankfully we did know that we were pregnant on Easter. However, seven weeks was simply too early to announce to the world, but the perfect time came!

This Live Simple Life may make you feel worthless sometimes, but remember you are priceless!

Our Infinitely More

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20

Years ago when we began the process of buying a business I kept having a scripture pop into my head over and over again. I knew it was a scripture, but I didn’t know where in the bible it came from and honestly I didn’t care. I didn’t even check. After a week or two of this scripture constantly popping into my head my sweet friend Sam sent me a text.

It said, “Morning! This was my daily scripture today, and I thought it was appropriate for you! Have a good day, love you!” Or something to that affect, but I was so taken back when I clicked the image. It was Ephesians 3:20! God was doing His best to get His word into my mind and heart, and used my friend to confirm.

I clung to those words while opening the business. Months later I created a Christian t-shirt line and once again the scripture kept coming to mind so I created a design just for it “Boss Lady” that has been one of our number one sellers.

However, being me I still didn’t truly get what God was trying to tell me. His Word got me through opening a business, starting a t-shirt line, but I still wasn’t letting it sink into my life.

Friday, March 24, 2017 it finally hit me like a ton of bricks. Happy bricks!

As I hung up the phone and bawled my eyes out (Not me at all, but pure gratitude) all I could think was…

If you know us personally then you know that we’ve been wanting a house to make a home forever. Literally, since before we got married our goal was to buy a house. I was that girl growing up that dreamed more about my future house than my wedding decorations. We tried constantly, yet always failed. Every time we got a step closer to our home we ended up 10 steps back. It finally got to the point that we just quit talking about it. Our family and friends were tired of hearing about it and so were we. We gave up.

Finally, out of nowhere it all aligned this year and we are proud owners of a beautiful home that is perfectly us.

Back to March 24th, it was Spring Break so I got the day off to spend with Kyle. We worked all morning on packing up the apartment, but that wasn’t what was truly on our mind. We had been waiting on a phone call all day long, and he finally zonked out on the couch in the afternoon. I had given up on getting the call that day, and sadly sat on the couch.

Finally, the phone rang. I ran to the bedroom to not wake Kyle, and shaking answered the phone and the conversation went like this…

The guy said “Hello is this Macey Rumsey?”

“Yes it is.”

He said, “Great, I got your blood work results for you.”

“Ok, Great” (I was really thinking “Please God!”)

He said, ” They came back positive.”

“OK………OK…so… you mean…. I’m pregnant?”

He said, “Yes m’am… (followed by BLAH BLAH BLAH)

I literally don’t have a clue what else he said, I was just trying to keep it together long enough to get off the phone.

As I said earlier for the first time in my life I couldn’t stop hysterically crying. I had previously thought of all kinds of fun ways to tell Kyle, but I didn’t care anymore. Once I pulled myself together to walk (more like run) to the living room I just jumped on him! Panicked he opened his eyes to see me bawling, and quickly became terrified. He had never seen me cry like that before, but then he realized the beaming smile. I said “It’s positive! It’s positive!”

We sat on the couch in awe of God for the rest of the day.

You see it may not seem like much to you, but we had been trying for two years to have a baby. With many doctor visits, many medicines, and a failed insemination in 2016 we prayed and prayed this one would work.

Everyone in our world knew of our desire for a home for the past four years, but not a soul had any idea of our deep desire for a child for the past two. We decided early on to keep it between the two of us, because when it was time we wanted it to be a surprise of pure excitement.

We sat on our couch on Friday, March 24, 2017 in complete awe of God. We had been so distracted by our desires and wants for a home and family of our own that we hadn’t paid enough attention to what God was saying…

I am able. My power is mighty. My power is for you. I will accomplish infinitely more than you could ever ask or think.

Our infinitely more is not only getting our perfect home, but having a beautiful baby to bring into this world. We would have never thought to ask or think for this perfect timing, but God knew.

He always knows. All glory is His.

This Live Simple Life may have plans that fall short, but God does infinitely more than we might ask or think.

P.S. I will fill you in on how we told everyone soon 🙂

Design & Devotion: Keep it Simple

Happy Sunday Friends,

We have been dreaming of becoming home owners for years, and it was finally our time. More like God’s time. Those of you that know us have been thinking “Thank God! Now we don’t have to listen to them talk about it!” Not true, now you just have to listen to us talk about how much we love it and see all the pretty pictures. (Sorry, not sorry)

This week we finished the smallest room, the bathroom! I thought I would combine two of my passions, design and devotion, and share with you a look into our home and life.

P.S. We were so excited to get started that I didn’t get the best “Before” pictures, but these will give you an idea. I was thankful to have a fairly blank canvas! (Handsome man in the mirror has worked his tail off!)

Step 1: Paint

unnamed (10)

Accent Wall – Sea Salt from Sherwin Williams

Walls – Alabaster from Sherwin Williams

Door, Trim, Cabinet – White from Sherwin Williams

Tip: If you watch for their online coupons you can get anywhere from 20-40% off your purchase, plus $10.00 off a certain dollar amount. We ended up saving over $80.00 on all our paint!

Step 2: Install custom fixtures

I am a lover of simple, farmhouse, and industrial. I sketched out just what I wanted and off to Menards we went!

After cleaning off the pieces it’s easier for me to lay it all out on the ground to visualize how it will display. For the wood shelving we grabbed one piece of standard 12ft board and cut it into six pieces to stain.

The shelving took some time (and a lot of my dad’s patience), but the towel and toilet paper holders were quick and easy!

Tip: Your hands will be covered in black, but that’s part of the fun. The piping and attachments aren’t as cheap as you would think, but they aren’t outrageous either. The pieces range from .69 – $2.95 each.

Step 3: Decorate (My favorite!)

I like to keep it simple, and the custom fixtures already added character so it didn’t take much!

We built the shelving to display the towels and such, which is a little unconventional, but that’s ok! I like that when people come over or stay with us they don’t have to wonder where everything is, it’s all easy access.

White Metal Basket – Ikea

Sea Salt Matching Towels – Tuesday Morning

Soap Pump – Tuesday Morning

The one thing I do still want to change down the road is the vanity top, I am not a fan! It can wait for now though (Hubby says so anyway)  I added the cotton balls, Q-Tips, and flowers on the counter to draw your eye to the texture not so much the counter. The massive mirror also draws your eye away from the counter. I found this gem at junkin’ event for $20.00! Woot Woot! Fresh coat of white paint and it made the entire bathroom feel more spa like.

Overall, I am very pleased with our new bathroom, and believe it or not the clean colors seem to keep it cleaner. I don’t know if that is actually possible, but hey I’ll take it!

I hope you all enjoyed the first look into our new home, and I hope you’ll finish your Sunday night with this in mind…

“Don’t load yourselves up with equipment. Keep it simple; you are the equipment…”

Luke 9:1-5 The Message

We so often want all that we can get. We want a bigger house to hold more people. We want nicer things to show more people. We just want more. Jesus was talking to the twelve disciples in Luke 9, and the scripture says He commissioned them to preach the news of God’s kingdom and heal the sick. He literally could have told them anything, yet He told them to keep it simple.

This Live Simple Life may get loaded full, but today I hope we remember it’s far more simple in God’s eyes. We are the equipment. We are His equipment.  May we be in good working order this week.
